Washer repair questions and answers
Can I repair my washing machine?
Yes, you can repair many washing machine faults yourself when the cause is a blocked pump filter, a kinked drain hose or a dirty door seal. Unplug the machine and turn off the water first. Faults inside the motor, the control board or the drum bearings need a technician, because a wrong guess costs a part and can damage the machine.
Why is my washing machine not working?
A washing machine usually stops working because of a power, door lock or drainage fault. Check that the socket works and the breaker has not tripped. Make sure the door clicks shut. If the machine hums but will not drain or spin, the pump filter or the drain pump is the likely cause. An error code on the display points to the exact part.
What makes a washing machine smell bad?
Detergent residue, lint and damp collecting where water sits make a washing machine smell bad. The door seal fold, the pump filter and the detergent drawer are the usual places. Cold and short cycles never flush them out. Run an empty hot cycle each month, wipe the seal, clean the filter and leave the door open between washes.
Can a washing machine leak from the bottom?
Yes, a washing machine can leak from the bottom, and the cause is usually a worn door seal, a loose drain hose or a cracked pump housing. A leak that appears only during the spin cycle points to the pump. A leak during filling points to the inlet hose or the valve. Stop using the machine until the leak is traced.
Do you repair washer brands that are not on this list?
Yes, WRFW repairs washer brands that are not on this list, because an unlisted washer is still built on one of a handful of platforms with parts that can be ordered. Tell us the make on the control panel and the model number from the sticker inside the lid or door. The technician confirms the fault at your home and orders the part if it is not carried.
Do you need my washer model number before the visit?
No, the model number is not required before the visit, but it helps the technician arrive with the right part. The model number is on a sticker inside the lid on a top load washer, or inside the door frame on a front load washer. Give the brand and the fault when you call, and read the model number to us if the sticker is easy to reach.
Can you repair several machines in one visit?
Yes, WRFW repairs several commercial washers in one visit when the machines are at the same address, and a laundromat with three Speed Queens on the same fault is one job. Each machine is tested on its own and you hear which are repaired on the first visit and which need a part ordered. Tell us the count when you call so the right parts travel.
Why are front load washers more expensive to repair?
Front load washers are more expensive to repair when the fault is the drum bearing, because the outer tub has to be split or replaced as a unit, while every other common front load repair costs about the same as the equivalent top load repair. The boot, the pump, the lock and the shock absorbers are all reached from the front. The bearing is the one exception.
Do the guides cover dishwashers, refrigerators or ovens?
No, the guides cover washers, dryers and dryer vents only, because WRFW repairs washers and dryers only and does not write about appliances it does not repair. A guide about a dishwasher or a refrigerator would be written from a manual rather than from repairs, and that is not the standard on this site.
